Are You Irreparably Broken?

Uncategorized Dec 11, 2024

I met with a client who had this fearful thought pop up,

“I’m someone who is irreparably broken.”

(read to the bottom for 3 Key Questions to ask yourself today)

First of all, I’ve had this thought too along the way. Have you?

My client was feeling weighed down and heavy, and was finding it hard to move forward with next steps in his life today, and with goals he is working on.

Me: Why don’t you lean in on that thought 100% and believe it as the “truth” from here on out?

Client: It feels like hanging out with a bad friend.

Me: So you don’t want to have him around more throughout the day? You’re not excited to schedule that next time to hang out with him?

Client: No.

Me: Why not?

Client: Because there’s part of me that believes I’m someone who is learning and growing.

Me: So part of you already doesn’t believe this idea that you’re broken?

Client: Right.

Me: Who are you without this bad friend?

Client: I’m feeling lighter and lighter as I focus more on the thought, “I’m someone who is learning and growing.”

NOTE: (There was some processing of feelings, connecting mind with body, and breathing that was a part of moving through this. Skills my client and I have been building and practicing together for him).

Result

My client is easily able to clarify what he chooses to focus on next. He gets decisive, keeps it focused and simple, and moves on with his day with more ease and flow.

Highlight #1

Client said the old him would have never reached out for help this way. And he is proud of himself for doing it the way he did that day.

Highlight #2

Fixed mindset example: I’m irreparably broken.

Growth mindset example: I’m someone who is learning and growing.

Fixed Mindset keeps you stuck.

Growth Mindset allows for forward movement, change, transformation, healing, etc.

Highlight #3

There’s a real power that can come from processing these types of thoughts and feelings with an experienced coach.

He is noticing the value of that for himself, and that is part of why he is reaching out for help in those key moments.

The power is within him.

But coaching can be a powerful vehicle to aid the process (and accelerate it, make it easier).

3 Key Questions For You:

  1. Are you shaming yourself for thinking about reaching out for help or do you choose to be proud of yourself for doing it?
  2. Considering the Fixed Mindset vs. the Growth Mindset: Which do you choose to feed right now in this moment (within yourself)?
  3. Could processing your thoughts/feelings with an experienced coach benefit you right now?
